What Can a Bluesky Profile Viewer See? Followers, Following, Posts and Verification

A Bluesky profile viewer shows the public profile: name, bio, followers, following, post count and verification status. It reads Bluesky's own public API, not a web page. What each field means, why a handle is a domain, and what the lookup leaves out.

A Bluesky profile viewer shows you the public profile of an account: its display name, bio, follower count, following count, number of posts, avatar and banner, and whether it carries a verification badge. It does not return the posts themselves.

Unlike most profile viewers, it does not read a web page. Bluesky publishes an API for this, and a viewer can call it directly.

You can try it on any account with the free Bluesky profile viewer. It needs no account and no key.

What does a Bluesky profile viewer show?

Field What it is When it is empty
Name and handle The display name and the account's handle The display name can be blank; the handle never is
Bio The text under the name The account has not written one
Followers The count Bluesky publishes for the profile Shown as a dash if absent
Following How many accounts it follows Shown as a dash if absent
Posts The post count Shown as a dash if absent
Verified Whether the account has a valid verification Shown as not verified

An empty field shows as a dash, never as a zero. A zero would say the account has no followers; a dash says Bluesky did not tell us.

Is a Bluesky viewer scraping?

No, and that is what makes this one different from the Instagram, Snapchat or LinkedIn viewers.

Bluesky's API definition for app.bsky.actor.getProfile describes it as "Get detailed profile view of an actor. Does not require auth, but contains relevant metadata with auth." It takes one parameter, actor, which is a handle or a DID. It returns a detailed profile with fields including followersCount, followsCount, postsCount, description, avatar, banner and a verification state. The definition is public, and a viewer is a thin wrapper over that call.

That does not mean you can do anything you like with it. Read Bluesky's current terms and published limits before you build something that depends on the data. What it does mean is that a viewer does not have to guess at a page layout, and a field Bluesky does not publish simply comes back empty.

Why is a Bluesky handle a domain?

Because on Bluesky a handle is a DNS name. Accounts on Bluesky's own service look like alice.bsky.social, and anyone can use a domain they own as their handle instead, which is why example.com can be a Bluesky account.

That has one practical consequence for a viewer: a bare name with no dot, like mkbhd, is not a Bluesky handle. Type the full handle, or paste the profile link from bsky.app/profile/. A viewer can also take a DID, the permanent identifier an account keeps even if it changes its handle.

What if the handle is not found?

Then Bluesky has no account with that handle. The usual cause is the spelling, or a name with no domain on it: remember that alice is not a handle and alice.bsky.social is.

What does it leave out?

The profile card is the whole lookup. The posts, replies, feeds and follower lists are separate surfaces, and the tool does not read them. It shows how many followers an account has, not who they are.

If you want an account's posts, that is a different call with different limits, and one we offer in the API.

The other free profile viewers

Bluesky is one of several. The others read only the public, logged-out profile of their platform, and each shows a dash for anything the platform does not publish.

All of them are on the free tools page. They are free to use, with a per-hour limit for each visitor: past it, a tool stops with a message that says when it resets.

What if you need it in code?

The tool is a window onto an endpoint. GET /v1/bluesky/profile?handle=... returns the same fields as a unified creator object, at one credit per profile. A request that fails, or comes back empty, is not charged.

curl "https://api.truescrape.com/v1/bluesky/profile?handle=jay.bsky.team" \
  -H "x-api-key: YOUR_KEY"

A new key comes with free credits, so you can try the call before you pay for anything.

We sell an API that reads public Bluesky data, so we have an interest in you using it. Weigh that accordingly, and use the viewer first: if what you need is on the page it shows, you do not need the API at all.
