How Do I Connect an AI Agent to Amazon Product Data? SP-API, Creators API or MCP

SP-API for your own seller data, Creators API if you qualify as an affiliate, or MCP search for public listings. A real search: 60 results for 3 credits.

It depends on whose data you need. For your own seller account, connect the agent to Amazon's Selling Partner API. For the public catalogue, Amazon's route is the Creators API, which requires an Associates account with recent sales. If you qualify for neither, or the question is about listings across a category, an MCP tool that reads public search results gets an agent going in minutes, with less data.

Most confusion comes from treating these as the same thing, when they answer different questions.

Which Amazon data route fits your agent?

Route Answers You need The catch
Selling Partner API "How are my orders, shipments and inventory?" A seller or vendor account, and developer registration It is for your own business data, not a view of competitors
Creators API "What does Amazon's catalogue say about this product?" Associates enrolment and qualifying sales Amazon requires 10 qualifying sales in the past 30 days
Public search through MCP "What is listed for this search, at what price?" An API key Search results only, with fewer fields, and no account data

Amazon describes the Selling Partner API as helping "sellers and vendors access their data", including "orders, shipments, payments, inventory, and other business information". If that is your question, use it, because nothing public can replace it. Community and hosted MCP servers wrap it, and the setup cost is the credentials and permissions Amazon requires.

The older Product Advertising API is the one many tutorials still describe. Amazon's deprecation notice says PA-API 5 "has been deprecated and is being replaced by the Creators API", so do not start a new project on it. Its replacement has the sales requirement above, read from Amazon's documentation on 1 November 2026. That rules out most teams that are not active affiliates.

How do you connect an agent to public Amazon listings?

With TrueScrape, the same command that connects everything else:

npx truescrape agent add claude-code

It also takes claude-desktop, cursor or vscode, needs an API key first, and a free one comes with 1,000 credits. Amazon and Walmart are in the default set of tools, so the agent can use amazon_search straight away.

What does a real Amazon search return?

Here is one call to the live server on 1 November 2026: amazon_search with the query standing desk. It took about 5 seconds and charged 3 credits, under half a cent at the $1.25 per 1,000 starter rate. The free credits cover about 333 of these.

What came back amazon_search walmart_search
Results on the page 60 62
With a price 60 62
Marked sponsored 12 22
With a star rating 60 53
With a review count 0 53
With a product link 48 62
Credits 3 3

Each result carries its position, ASIN or item id, title, thumbnail, price, list price, rating, badges and whether it is sponsored. A result looks like this:

{
  "position": 2,
  "id": "B085KBN2DN",
  "title": "SHW 55 x 28 Electric Height Adjustable Standing Desk w/Drawer, Black",
  "price": 189.87,
  "currency": "USD",
  "listPrice": null,
  "rating": 4.5,
  "reviewCount": null,
  "isSponsored": true
}

The nulls are real, and they matter. None of the 60 Amazon results had a review count, a seller or availability, and the 12 without a link were the 12 sponsored ones. Walmart's results had all of those. An agent asked to rank Amazon results by popularity has nothing to rank with here, and it should say so rather than invent a number.

This is one page of one query at one moment. It shows what the tool returns. It says nothing about the standing desk market, and prices and placement change, so have the agent record when it looked.

What can't this tell your agent?

The honest answer to "can I get full Amazon product data this way?" is no. We promise search results, and these are the gaps to plan around:

  • Review text and review counts. Not in these results.
  • Sales figures, rank history and buy box share. Amazon does not publish sales, and a tool that reports them is showing a model's estimate. Ask how it was made.
  • Your own orders and inventory. That is the Selling Partner API.
  • Complete catalogue coverage. A search returns what Amazon shows for that query on that page, sponsored placements included.

There are also amazon_product and amazon_offers tools. In this session amazon_product answered for the two ASINs we tried, while amazon_offers returned nothing for the one we tried, even though that ASIN had just appeared in search. Treat these as worth trying and check the result, because Amazon is one of the harder sources to read and we do not promise them. A failed or empty call is free. The Amazon reference lists each tool's inputs and price.

Automated reading of a retail site also has terms to consider. Amazon's Conditions of Use address automated data gathering, so read them against what you plan to do, and see is web scraping legal? for the broader picture. These tools read only logged-out public pages, and that lowers some risks without settling the question.

What is a good first job for an agent?

Amazon search is most useful as one input to a wider question, because the agent can combine sources in a single conversation:

Compare what Amazon and Walmart list for standing desks under $300, then check what Reddit says about the top three. Separate sponsored results from the rest, say how many results you read, and link each product.

That prompt calls amazon_search and walmart_search at 3 credits each, then reddit_search at 1 credit per product, so about 9 credits. It asks for three things that keep the answer honest: sponsored results kept apart, a stated sample size, and links you can check. Our Reddit call in this session returned 7 posts for the plain query standing desk, so a narrower product name may return few or none.

Walmart, Zillow and Redfin work the same way, through walmart_search and the other product and property endpoints. The tools an agent has not loaded stay reachable through explore_tools, which is free. Failed and empty calls cost nothing on any of them.

Choose by the question you need answered. Your own business data calls for the Selling Partner API. Affiliate content, with the sales to qualify, calls for the Creators API. For a quick, sourced look at what the public sees, connect a search tool, and the agents page has the setup. To point the same agent at social platforms, see how to give Claude access to competitors' social media.

Everything described here runs on the same API. You are never charged for a failed request, an empty result, or a cache hit.
