Paste the link of the YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook or Dailymotion video, look at the preview, and save the image. There is no app and no account. Start with the YouTube thumbnail downloader, or use the tool for your platform below.
The rest of this page is how a thumbnail is found, what size to expect, and where it stops.
Which tool do you need?
- YouTube thumbnail downloader
- Instagram thumbnail downloader
- X thumbnail downloader
- Facebook thumbnail downloader
- TikTok thumbnail downloader
- Dailymotion thumbnail downloader
Each one saves the cover image only. To save the video itself, see how to download Instagram, Facebook and X videos.
How does a thumbnail downloader work?
A thumbnail is an ordinary image file on the platform's servers, so there are only two questions: what is its address, and will the platform let your browser fetch it?
YouTube needs no lookup. Its thumbnail addresses follow from the video id, for example i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. Your browser can build the address and fetch the file, so that tool makes no API call and uses none of our allowance.
Other platforms need one. The cover image's address is signed and changes, so it has to be read from the post. We do that lookup and your browser fetches the file directly. We never receive the image and we do not keep a copy.
What size will you get?
| Platform | What we measured |
|---|---|
| YouTube | 1280 by 720 when the largest size exists, then 640 by 480, then 480 by 360 |
| Others | Whatever size the platform publishes for that post, which varies |
We save the file as the platform publishes it and do not upscale it.
Why does my YouTube thumbnail have black bars?
YouTube's 640 and 480 pixel sizes are 4:3 images. A widescreen video's picture sits inside them with black bars above and below, and those bars are in YouTube's own file. Not every video has the 1280 pixel size, so a video without it falls back to one of these.
Is it allowed?
A thumbnail is part of someone's work, and being public does not make it free to reuse. Save thumbnails you made or have permission to use. For the wider question, see whether web scraping is legal.
What if you need it in code?
For a YouTube thumbnail alone, build the address yourself. When you want the title, counts and thumbnail together, the post lookups are API endpoints at one credit, and a call that fails or comes back empty is not charged. Each returns thumbnailUrl, and you download the file yourself.
We sell that API, so we have an interest in you using it. If saving one image is all you need, the free tools are enough. Everything else is on the free tools page.
