Instagram profile picture downloader

Enter an Instagram handle and save its profile picture to your device. It reads the public profile, needs no account, and the image comes from Instagram to you, not through us.

Only save pictures you made or have permission to use. We do not store or host anything: the file goes from Instagram to your device.

How to save a profile picture

  1. Type the handle, like @nasa, or copy the address of the profile from your browser.
  2. Paste it in the box above and press Get picture.
  3. Check the preview, then press Download image to keep the file.

The file comes from Instagram’s servers straight to your device, so it uses your connection, not ours.

How this works

Paste an Instagram handle or profile link. We read the public profile, the part Instagram shows a visitor who is not signed in, and find the address of its picture. Your browser downloads the file from Instagram directly, so it never passes through our server and we keep no copy, and you save it at the size Instagram publishes, which is small.

Questions

Is this the HD version?
No. It is the size Instagram gives a visitor who is not logged in. On the large public account we checked that was 150 by 150 pixels, and the field Instagram labels HD held the same file. We do not upscale it or call it larger than it is.
Does it work on a private account?
It reads only what Instagram shows a logged-out visitor. If the picture is part of that, you get the picture and nothing else from the account. Posts and followers are never read.
Why did my lookup fail?
Instagram often gives the same answer for a handle that does not exist as for one it will not show logged out, so the two can look identical. Check the spelling and try again.
Is it allowed?
Save only pictures you made or have permission to use. That a file is public does not make it free to reuse, and posting someone else’s work as your own can infringe their copyright and Instagram’s terms.
Is there a limit?
Yes. Each visitor gets a limited number of lookups per hour, so the tool stays free for everyone. When you reach it, the page says when it resets.
How do I do this in code?
GET /v1/instagram/profile takes a handle at 1 credit and returns avatarUrl with the rest of the profile. A cached copy costs nothing, and you download the file yourself.
