How Do You Download an Instagram or TikTok Profile Picture? What Size You Really Get

Enter the handle, preview the picture, save the file. No login needed. The size is the part most tools blur: Instagram hands a logged-out visitor a small image, and TikTok a much larger one.

Enter the handle, look at the preview, and save the file. There is no app and no account. You can do it here for Instagram profile pictures and TikTok profile pictures.

The rest of this page is what size you actually get, where the file comes from, and when it will not work.

What size is the picture?

It depends on the platform, and this is the part worth checking before you rely on one.

Platform Size a logged-out visitor gets What we measured
Instagram Small 150 by 150 pixels on one large public account
TikTok Much larger 755 to 1080 pixels square on four large accounts

Instagram's public profile has a field labelled HD for the picture. On the account we checked, it held the very same 150 pixel file as the normal one. So a page that promises an "HD" Instagram picture from a logged-out request is either upscaling a small image or doing something other than reading the public profile. We save the file as Instagram publishes it and do not stretch it.

Does the picture go through our server?

No. Our side looks up the profile, which is a small request, and reads the address of the picture from it. Your browser then fetches the image from the platform's own servers, over your own connection. We never receive the file and we do not keep a copy.

When will it not work?

  • The handle is wrong. Check the spelling first. Both platforms often answer the same way for a name that does not exist as for one they will not show to a logged-out visitor, so the tool cannot always tell those apart.
  • The account shows no picture to a logged-out visitor. These tools read only the public, logged-out page. If the picture is not on it, there is nothing to save.
  • You reached the hourly limit. Each visitor gets a limited number of lookups per hour, and the page says when it resets.

Is it allowed?

A profile picture is still somebody's image, often a photo of them. That it is public does not make it free to reuse. Save pictures you made or have permission to use, and do not use one to pretend to be that person. For the wider question of what public data may be used for, see whether web scraping is legal.

What if you need it in code?

Both lookups are API endpoints at one credit, and a call that fails or comes back empty is not charged:

  • GET /v1/instagram/profile?handle=nasa
  • GET /v1/tiktok/profile?handle=tiktok

Each returns the profile with its avatarUrl, and you download the file yourself, the way these pages do.

We sell that API, so we have an interest in you using it. If saving one picture is all you need, the free tool is enough. Everything else is on the free tools page.

Everything described here runs on the same API. You are never charged for a failed request, an empty result, or a cache hit.
